How to Use Instagram for Multi-Level Marketing

What is it with MLM? Why are people always trying to sell the greatest new skincare product since sliced bread?

Well, it’s because the rise of people wanting to make money online.

Everyone’s trying to compete with others. There’s no shortage of influencers who are just trying to out do everyone.

Now that there are so many opportunities on the world wide web, there are more spammers than ever before.

The MLM industry is just another way for people to make money from their home.

But there’s a time and place to do it.

Most people that try selling products online fail (over 95%) because they’re doing it all wrong.

However, I am here to teach you to be different.

To stand out.

To go against the grain.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

If you read this article all the way through you will know exactly what to do to create a successful MLM business on Instagram.

So without further ado, lets get right into it.

Instagram Is a Gold Mine

In the grand scheme of things, Instagram is a fricken goldmine for making money online.

I mean, where else can you DM celebrities directly and they actually open your messages?

Sometimes you might even get a reply.

It’s not saturated with geriatrics like Facebook.

Instagram is filled with hustlers. There’s less noise than Twitter and Facebook where you are constantly bombarded with news, opinions, and 1000 reasons why everyone hates everyone.

It’s actually one of the most engaging social media platforms out there. At least 2-7% of people interact with each post.

That means if you have 10,000 followers, at least 200 – 700 people will interact with your posts. Of course this will be higher if you’re well respected in your field.

If you’re not on Instagram you need to get on this wagon while it’s hot.

There’s a Lot of Negative Energy Around MLM


First and foremost let me tell you by saying every man, women, aunt, uncle and their dog are in the MLM industry.

There’s so many people trying to sell their weight loss shake or skincare product, it’s just a massive spamfest for everyone and their opportunity.

This happens all over Facebook and Instagram. There’s no shortage of people trying to sell you a health product online.

Because of this you are going to look spammy until your prove otherwise.

That’s why you need to approach it differently than everyone else.

Basically we’ll be establishing ourselves as an authority figure, a professional, someone that knows what they’re talking about.

People will buy from you once they know you, like you and trust you. And here’s how.

How to Approach it the Right Away


Brand Yourself, Not Your Business

Username – Do not give yourself a brand name. You need to brand yourself with your name to make you look more approachable and less spammy.

Profile Picture – Your profile picture should include a picture of you. Not your product, not your business logo, but you. This is the first thing people see when they land on your page. Make a good first impression.

Bio – Your bio is the second thing they see. Spark curiosity by being interesting and linking to your linktree or website. Your bio is NOT a place to sell, it’s for people to learn more about you.

Look Professional In All Areas

Your photos need to be on point.

In a platform where everyone’s competing for everyone’s attention, you can’t get away with being mediocre and posting mediocre content.

You need to put your best foot forward. Take the time to create the perfect photo, it’ll help you in the long run with more clicks and more sales.

That’s why your profile needs to be aesthetically pleasing with good content, a clean bio (doesn’t look promotional or spammy), and a juicy profile picture.

I recommend a close up of your face for your profile pic, but experiment with different angles and props. Louis Myers explains this in detail.

Content Posting Needs to Be On Point

You should post 80% informative/entertainment/interesting content, while the other 20% can be your promotional stuff.

Instagram is far different than Facebook and Twitter, you only need to post about 1 – 2 times per day.

Quality triumphs quantity on Instagram, so don’t spam every 2 hours trying to sell everyone your product.

If you’re posting 2 times a day (14 times a week), you can post your product 2-3 times a week.

However, as long as you’re providing value and not posting junk.

Use the Correct Hashtags

One hashtag strategy that I’ve been using, and something I need to credit Caitee Elizabeth for, is to categorize your hashtags.

For example:

Use hashtags related to your industry, brand, and content.

Lets say you’re selling weight loss shakes.

  • Brand hashtags – Name the brand and hashtags your brand recommends
  • Industry hashtags – Weight loss, fit life, healthy living, etc
  • Content hashtags – protein shake review, gains, morning routine, etc

Use these all in the same post for maximum exposure.

I recommend a total of 15 – 30 hashtags per post, but don’t over do it by doing the maximum in every picture.

Network Regularly

Take the time out of your day to network with other people in your industry.

Taking 1 hour out of your day to respond to DMs, replying to comments and commenting on posts will make all the difference.

At the end of the day your network is your net worth.

Being an MLM marketer means you need to increase your network, and build relationships with people.

They are the ones with your money, not the person that randomly stumbled across your page.

It’s all about being known, likable, and trustworthy. After that you can start making sales.

That’s why sliding into peoples DMs telling them they should buy your product will get you zero sales. It’s never worked and never will.

Follow People That Inspire You

Look for people in your industry that are hugely successful.

When do they post? How often do they post? What type of content are they posting?

These are the questions you need to ask yourself when looking at the experts in your field.

Don’t flat out copy them, but draw inspiration from their work.

What they’re doing is obviously working, so add your own twist to make it original to you.

Pro tip: Go to pages that inspire you and follow their followers. If you have great content they’ll probably follow you back. After a few days doing this unfollow them to keep your follow count low (unless you enjoy their content).

Show, Don’t Sell

One of the biggest secrets to succeed by selling something online is to show the benefits of the product, do not sell.

I even touched a little on this in my tutorial on Facebook marketing.

For example:

“This health shake is so nice, it always fills me up, and I eat less throughout the day. My brother even loves it and he never likes healthy drinks!”.

That’s a much better sales pitch than this:

“These health shakes are selling for 50% off and offer a 30-day money back guarantee. That way you’ve got nothing to lose! Get in while they’re still cheap”.

This just screams spam and unprofessional. Everyone’s doing this, don’t be like everyone else.

Utilize Stories

Stories are good for giving your followers a “behind-the-scenes” look into your life and building that all-important trust factor.

You can create stories of yourself working on a new project, what you’re doing for the day, using the product, showing something cool you’re doing, or maybe providing your opinion on something trendy.

There are thousands of things to show in your IG story. Be creative, bring out your personality, stories will help people learn more about you faster than your posts will.

How Many Followers Do I Need?


Follower count is good but it’s not going to matter if you’re not engaged with your followers.

You can have 50,000 followers and not make any sales because no one knows you or cares about you.

On the other hand, you can have 5,000 followers and make consistent sales if people like and trust you.

That’s why you need to always engage with others, provide solutions to their problems, answer questions, etc

That’s 100x more important than getting followers.

Of course increase your follower count as time goes on because without followers you can’t make any money.

But you need to build connections with them along the way. You can’t put the cart before the horse.

How to Make Money Without Selling
